The author identified the top 100 cited publications in paediatric ophthalmology in an effort to identify which topics are most strongly represented and potential areas where further research is needed. An ISI Web of Science database search was conducted in March 2022 with coverage of 1900–2022. The top 100 articles were published between 1941 and 2018 with most from 2005–2012. Cumulative total citations were 29,731 (165–1750 total per article). The top articles covered myopia, retinopathy of prematurity, other refractive error, retinoblastoma, amblyopia, strabismus, vision screening, congenital cataract, congenital defects, child blindness, congenital glaucoma, idiopathic intracranial hypertension and development. Top publications were in IOVS, JAMA Ophthalmology, and Ophthalmology. Top study designs were cohort studies, RCT, cross-sectional studies and reviews. The author concludes that research in paediatric ophthalmology is growing rapidly and being conducted at high level.
