The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence and risk factors for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in two neo-natal units, and included a sub-analysis of infants with gestational age (GA) of ≥28 weeks. A retrospective review was undertaken of 475 infants (221 female) with median GA of 30 weeks (range 23-36 weeks) and median birth weight (BW) of 1229g (range 408-2620). Active stage 1 ROP was present in 113 with 60 being severe (type 1 or 2). Significant risk factors for ROP included GA and hyperglycemia for severe ROP. For infants aged ≥28 weeks, risk factors included bronchopulmonary dysplasia, late onset sepsis and hyperglycemia for severe ROP.
