This study aimed to analyse risk factors for reoperative rate in strabismus surgery. This was a retrospective review of case notes and included patients in 2 groups: (1) 77 patients with second surgery and (2) 75 patients with single surgery and postoperative distance angle of ≤10PD. Group 1 comprised 35 residual exotropia, 13 residual esotropia, 24 consecutive exotropia and 3 consecutive esotropia. Group 2 included 42 intermittent exotropia, 10 partial accommodative esotropia, 5 non-accommodative esotropia, 10 infantile esotropia, 4 paralytic strabismus, 2 sensory esotropia and 4 sensory exotropia. Asymmetrical surgery and fixation preference were statistically significant predictors (greater asymmetrical surgery in group 1). Significant differences in reoperative rates were found for group 1, for age, age at first diagnosis and age at first surgery (all younger), less/shorter follow-up time, greater distance angle preoperatively, worse convergence near point and greater lens thickness.
