In this study the authors aimed to compare the conjunctival-scleral thickness as measured with anterior segment (AS) OCT before and after medial rectus muscle resection or plication for exotropia. This was a prospective study of 7 resection cases and nine plication (20 muscles of 19 patients). Mean age was 31.7 years (range 12-70) for resection and 26.7 years (range 8-67) for plication. Resection was a mean of 6.2 ±0.2mm and plication was 5.9 ±0.9mm. There was no difference for age, gender, surgery amount or difference in conjunctival-scleral thickness before or at three-to-six-month follow-up. The authors acknowledge the small sample size of this study and that the conjunctival-scleral area was too thick to measure by AS-OCT at one week or one month follow-up. By observation, they determined postoperative distension because of inflammatory oedema and folded or resected muscle. No patient complained of this or of discomfort.
