The purpose of this study was to determine retinal nerve fibre (RNFL) thickness parameters and assess the relationship between the cup-to-disc (CD) ratio and RNFL measurements of paediatric patients who had optic nerve appearance suspicious for glaucoma based on enlarged CD ratios. This was a retrospective study of 43 patients; 25 males and 18 females aged 9.3 ±2.7 years. Intraocular pressure was a mean of 17.4 ±3.1mmHG, central corneal thickness (CCT) of 583 ±44um, refraction of -0.48 V 2.20D and CD ratio of 0.66 ±0.09. The dioptre CD ratio was a mean 0.66 ±0.3 and global RNFL was 99.0 ±9.2um. The CD ratios were not associated with any RNFL parameters. Bruch’s membrane opening size was directly correlated with RNFL thickness. The authors recommend that in paediatric patients with suspected glaucoma, myopic refractive error and Bruch’s membrane opening size should be considered to prevent misinterpretation of OCT results.
