The authors investigate the factors affecting better stereopsis outcomes in 29 patients with refractive accommodative esotropia with an age of onset within 6 months of life who were successfully treated. The study included 17 males and 12 females with mean age at onset, initial visit and first wearing of glasses of 3.6 ±1.8 months, 15.1 ±9.1 months and 15.4 ±9 months, respectively. Mean initial spherical equivalent refraction was +3.80 ±1.80D for right eyes and +4.10 ±1.50D for left eyes. At the initial visit, mean deviation angle without glasses was +21.5 ±9.2PD at near and +21.4 ±7.8PD at distance. Mean age at final visit was 7.7 ±4.2 years. Mean duration of treatment was 5.8 ±2.5 years and, at final visit, mean angle of deviation with glasses was +2.4 ±5.9PD at near and +1.4 ±5.6PD at distance. Mean stereoacuity was 3331”; 2 had fine stereoacuity, 9 coarse and 18 with no stereopsis. There was no significant difference in those with or without stereopsis and any factors. However, the authors found that those with stereopsis were those who first wore glasses at age 8 months or younger. They acknowledge the limitations of this study with retrospective design and small patient numbers.
