The authors aimed to report the scope of neuro-ophthalmology clinics in Australia, referral patterns and develop a quality assurance framework for referrals. Cases were identified from a single tertiary neuro-ophthalmology centre. Data was prospectively collected into the National Neuro-ophthalmology Database (NODE). A modified Delphi consensus study was conducted with ophthalmologists, with consensus defined as >75%, to establish the most appropriate triage category (Australian Department of Health’s standardised time-to-consultation guidelines) for common neuro-ophthalmological conditions. A comparison between agreed triage categories and real-world experience was assessed. Data from 676 participants were analysed from NODE, which included a wide range of diagnoses. Agreement of triage categories was achieved following two Delphi rounds. Comparison of the framework and real-world experience revealed the majority of cases were triaged appropriately and had a consultation within the recommended time period. The database and quality assurance framework has been expanded to include three other tertiary neuro-ophthalmology centres, allowing benchmarking and quality improvement. There is potential for future research using NODE.
