Cycloplegic retinoscopy refraction versus Retinomax K-Plus 5 autorefraction

In this study, the authors present their results comparing cycloplegic refraction with retinoscopy versus hand-held Retinomax K-Plus 5 autorefraction. The study included 213 children aged 0.1 to 20 years (426 eyes). Mean age was 6.2 ±4.4 years. They examined sphere, astigmatism, spherical equivalent and axis for the total sample and per age group (≤five / >five years). For the total sample, significant differences were found in spherical power, astigmatism power and axis values in both age groups with greater differences for younger children. K-Plus recorded more hyperopia and higher astigmatism than retinoscopy, and more so in younger children. The results suggest autorefraction may not be accurate enough for children under five years but may be useful for screening in older children.
