The multinational Interdisciplinary Working Group for Uveitis in Children consists of 10 paediatric rheumatologists and five paediatric ophthalmologists with expertise in paediatric uveitis. They identified a simplified screening recommendation to enable local eyecare professionals (ECPs) to screen children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) with confidence, based on current evidence. The group recommended all children with previous anterior uveitis should be investigated by rheumatologist and followed up at least yearly until the end of growth or up to seven years after the onset of the eye disease. The group also recommended uveitis screening for those who are ≤seven years old, two-monthly in year one, three-four-monthly in years two-four, six-monthly in years five-seven, and annually for children older than seven years. When JIA is diagnosed in children older than seven years, it should be three-four-monthly for year one, six-monthly for years two-four, and annually from year five onwards. The authors commented that this new guidance will allow more reliable screening by local ECPs and improve the care standard at the local level.
