Published in 2022, this is a clinically focused textbook aimed primarily at junior ophthalmology trainees and foundation doctors entering the specialty. It builds on the previous edition, and whilst no new sections were added, the existing ones were updated and improved.

The book follows a logical progression across 13 distinct chapters, covering core ophthalmic subspecialties ranging from oculoplastics and glaucoma to paediatric ophthalmology and medical retina. Each chapter begins with an abstract, followed by a foundation in the relevant anatomy before tackling investigations, diagnosis and management of conditions. Diagrams are relevant and well-labelled.

The textbook covers up-to-date DVLA guidelines and professional standards, both of which are commonly overlooked in traditional medical textbooks. It also includes a highly practical chapter on microsurgical skills, detailing sutures, forceps as well as providing common example scenarios. However, it does lack the integration of other media types (e.g. video via QR codes), that would complement this section well.

While it favours clinical breadth over subspecialty depth, this textbook functions well as an overview of the specialty. It holds little value for senior clinicians but serves as an excellent resource for junior trainees looking to build a secure foundation or revise for specialty exams.
