This first edition addresses a key challenge in ophthalmology: effective drug delivery to the eye. It focuses on translating scientific advances into clinical and industrial practice, offering a comprehensive synthesis of contemporary research.
Early chapters cover ocular anatomy, physiology and drug delivery barriers before going on to discuss advanced delivery systems. Nanotechnology is thoroughly explored, including nanoparticles, liposomes and dendrimers. Other approaches such as hydrogels, inserts and sustained-release systems are also extensively discussed. These chapters are detailed and relevant to current research and development. Emerging technologies are also addressed. Microneedles and 3D printing reflect the direction of travel in the field. These sections are forward-looking and engaging.
There is a welcome focus on industrial application. Topics such as quality by design, manufacturing and regulatory pathways are included. This adds practical value and distinguishes the text from more academic titles. Clinical application is inconsistently discussed, and the bridge between novel delivery systems and routine practice remains unclear.
The writing style itself is variable. At times, overly wordy and repetitive, with core concepts such as anatomy and ocular barriers revisited several times without additional insight. Some chapters contain dense blocks of text that would benefit from shorter paragraphs, making the material easier to digest. Figures and tables are employed to illustrate concepts and summarise key information. And whilst many are helpful, the quality of some images are poor, limiting their usefulness.
For ophthalmology trainees, this book offers a depth of insight that goes well beyond the required syllabus. Trainees with a strong interest in ocular pharmacology, research or academia may find certain chapters valuable.
On the whole, the text offers thorough and applicable insights. It will appeal most to researchers and those involved in drug development. Clinicians with a specific interest in ocular therapeutics will also find value. A tighter structure and clearer presentation would strengthen future editions.
