The International Opticians Association (IOA) has given Thomas Truckenbrod a special award recognising his outstanding contribution to the optical profession. The award was presented by IOA director of development Elaine Grisdale at the SILMO d’Or ceremony on Saturday 30 September in Paris.

This special recognition award, which has only been given twice before, recognises Thomas Truckenbrod’s important influence on the optical profession and his numerous honorary offices. As president of the Zentralverband der Augenoptiker und Optometristen (ZVA) for 13 years plus two years as vice president, he ensured the integration, validation and development of opticians. While driving the profession forwards, he has continued his optician’s business in Leipzig, a family business stretching over 100 years and through five generations. His wise counsel and leadership have benefitted optical professionals and patients not only in Germany but also throughout Europe.

Donald Crichton, IOA president, said: “It is truly gratifying to be the president of an association that is aligned with leaders in our profession such as Thomas Truckenbrod and to be able to show our appreciation for his astonishing contribution and leadership throughout his career.”
