The Optical Suppliers Association (OSA) Sustainability Committee held its first meeting on Friday 23 July. The aim of the committee is to provide information, support and advice to OSA members who want to demonstrate their commitment to behaving in a more environmentally sensitive and more
sustainable way.
The committee is chaired by Jayne Abel, Co-Founder of Eyespace, with Julian Wiles, Managing Director of Performance Lenses, the Deputy Chair.
Jayne Abel expressed her delight at being asked to Chair this important new committee, and stressed the challenges that OSA members face: “The climate crisis is real and we must act now. As business owners we have a responsibility to take custody of our industry, to monitor and manage its impact on the natural world. There is a growing portfolio of eco-suppliers in the UK, EU and Far East and the more we invest in them, the wider and more cost-effective our choices will be in the coming decade”.

Jayne adds: “We need to change the way the optical community thinks and provide choices for practices and patients so that they are empowered to make the right decisions for the future of our planet. Our work at the Sustainability Committee for the OSA will help and support our members to establish strategies, programs and activities within the optical community to set global standards for eco conscious processes and help members realise that green practices can be practical and attainable.”
The Committee has announced that it plans to develop a voluntary charter that members can sign up to, to show their commitment to behaving in an environmentally responsible way.
The OSA is delighted to be part of the ABDO first SEE Summit on the Environment on 4 October.
