The Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) welcomes the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) eye care support pathway.

Developed in partnership with health and social care professionals, people with lived experience of eyecare services and sight loss, the third sector and professional bodies across the eyecare sector.

The eye care support pathway aims to highlight people’s needs at four key stages in their eyecare journey:

  • having an initial appointment
  • having a diagnosis confirmed
  • support after a diagnosis
  • living well with my condition.

Max Halford, clinical lead for ABDO, said, "ABDO welcomes and endorse this important eye care support pathway. Dispensing opticians are often the first eye care professional a patient encounters in practice and they recognise the importance of effective and timely communication with patients who are often worried and confused about where to seek support.

"This work will help us on our journey to transform eyecare services for patients from the very moment they walk into our practices."
