Advancing Eyecare (AEC), a leading North American provider of ophthalmic instruments, has acquired Birmingham Optical Group, a top UK supplier of optical equipment and services. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
With over 60 years of industry experience, Birmingham Optical is known for its reliability and innovation. The company serves opticians, hospitals, clinics, and labs across the UK and Ireland, and is the exclusive distributor of NIDEK products in the region. It also partners with brands like Natus, Keeler, Oertli, Hanita Lenses, and Volk, offering a diverse portfolio across price points.
This acquisition marks AEC’s expansion into the UK market, enhancing its global presence. Birmingham Optical will continue under the leadership of Arran Fewkes and its current management team, operating as a division of AEC and reporting to CEO Jim McGrann.

Jim McGrann
McGrann stated, “Birmingham Optical’s strong UK market presence and customer relationships complement AEC’s North American capabilities. We’re excited to work together to build one of the largest ophthalmic service networks across both continents.”

Arran Fewkes
Fewkes added, “Partnering with AEC opens new opportunities to expand our reach and product offerings while maintaining the high level of service our customers expect.”
This move follows AEC’s recent partnership with Eyefficient, an Ohio-based ophthalmic instrument supplier. CapM Advisors served as financial advisor to AEC. The acquisition strengthens AEC’s position as a global leader in eyecare instrumentation, with an expanded product range and geographic reach.
