Welcome to the 17th episode of Beyond 2020, the video series from Andean Medical Mission | Bolivian Medical Charity that looks at strategies to eliminate avoidable blindness in countries with developing eyecare services and shares ideas and solutions to common difficulties in working abroad.

When working in remote settings, screening patients for surgery can quickly become overwhelming. At Andean Medical Mission, we’ve spent over 15 years working in the Bolivian Amazon — identifying, treating, and restoring sight to more than 2000 patients. During a typical outreach, we may see 500–1000 people, while only having capacity to operate on 100–150 patients. So how do you decide who to treat? In this video, we share five practical tips to help guide decision-making when screening patients in resource-limited settings.
