The College of Optometrists hosted academics from across the UK and internationally at a special symposium to mark 100-years of its research journal Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics (OPO) at Glasgow Caledonian University.
OPO Centenary: Celebrating Research Excellence saw academics and optometrists come together for an afternoon of talks by OPO-published authors and editorial board members discussing their work, as well as sharing reflections on the history and future of the journal.

- Dr Neil Handley PhD, AMA, FRSA, Curator of the British Optical Association Museum at The College of Optometrists
- Professor Frank Schaeffel, Senior Professor, University of Tuebingen
- Professor Christine Dickinson FCOptom, Professor of Clinical Optometry at the University of Manchester
- Professor Jeremy Guggenheim MCOptom, Cardiff University
- Professor Nicola Logan FCOptom, Aston University
- Professor John Lawrenson FCOptom, City St George’s, University of London.
The College of Optometrists announced earlier this year that OPO will be published by Springer Nature from January 2026, signalling its long-term commitment to research and innovation that supports and advances the profession.
Michael Bowen, Director of Knowledge and Research at The College of Optometrists, commented: “From its origins as the British Journal of Physiological Optics, over the past 100-years OPO has grown from strength to strength to become a leading international vision science and optometry journal with 400,000 readers globally. The centenary event celebrated the incredible contribution that OPO has made to optometric, optical and eye health research, through its publication of original research papers, technical notes, reviews, editorials and letters from contributors around the world, and the wider impact that this research and innovation has made on optometric practice.”
Professor Mark Rosenfield MCOptom, Editor-in-Chief of OPO, said: “As OPO embarks on its second century, it will continue to cover all aspects relating to the use, preservation and restoration of vision. OPO is now a global enterprise, highlighting the rapid innovations in vision and eye care taking place around the world, leading to advancements in the clinical management of ocular and visual conditions.”
