The Care and Quality Commission (CQC) has recognised a Leicester-based eye hospital as ‘Good’ following the site’s first assessment since opening last year. Based in the city centre on St Matthews Way, CHEC is a community-based provider of ophthalmology services to people living in Leicester and the surrounding areas, working in partnership with the NHS to reduce waiting times by giving patients increased choice.

Following a thorough evaluation process across five main areas: safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness, and leadership, CHEC was awarded ‘Good’ status. One of the key areas which contributed to this award was CHEC’s free Home to Hospital pick up service, and the community provider’s short waiting times for treatment.

Jose Bailey, Commercial Director at CHEC, explains: “We put the patient front and centre of every decision we make about our service provision and operations. While the objective was to create an environment that delivered the very best quality and care for the patients, to be recognised as ‘Good’ by CQC is a brilliant achievement for our team.”

CHEC first opened its doors to Leicester patients in March 2022. Since then, the community provider of ophthalmology services has consulted more than 13,600 patients and carried out over 3500 cataract surgeries.

“Based on our current performance, we can assess and treat patients in an average of three weeks,” continues Jose. Our general ophthalmology provision is a well-established service across Leicestershire, so it’s more convenient than ever for local residents to access ophthalmology diagnostics and treatments in the community.”
