Ophthalmology trainees from the East of England were invited to attend a landmark surgical training event being hosted by Newmedica Suffolk in May 2025 where they were able to gain invaluable experience from national experts in the field of cataract surgery.
"At Newmedica, we’re fully committed to enhancing and promoting the highest quality of patient care and that’s precisely why teaching and training will always be so important to us," says Usman Hussain, Clinical Director and Educational Lead at Newmedica Suffolk.
In the first of its kind, the training day on Tuesday 6 May featured a team of national cataract surgery experts, the latest generation of virtual reality surgical simulation and interactive workshops which was tailored to the individual stage of training of those attending.
The training event was being run in conjunction with the East of England Deanery and featured training on premium lens implant technology with an emphasis on patient education, patient selection, surgical planning and surgical simulation.
Suffolk Newmedica partners Rosemary Smith, Usman Hussain and Raj Hanspal hosted the landmark training day.
"We’re delighted to be able to host the trainees within region; it’s a real honour to have been invited to deliver this educational content which trainees often won’t gain significant exposure to given premium lens surgery tends to occur almost exclusively in private care."
Mr Hussain, a leading Corneal and Cataract Consultant Ophthalmic surgeon, added: "The training day will specifically focus on aspects of cataract surgery which Newmedica Consultants excel in such as managing surgical complexity, effectively planning surgery to reduce complication rates and delivering the very best standards of care in refractive cataract surgery."
As well as consultant ophthalmologists delivering sessions on subspeciality complexity in cataract surgery, there were sessions on surgical training within high volume cataract surgery as well as recent and expected changes within healthcare provision in the UK.
He concluded: "We’re fully committed to training and absolutely recognise the importance of this event for our trainees as well as patients. It’s such an exciting opportunity and the whole team is immensely proud to be innovating not just in the way we care for our patients but also how we educate our colleagues and future Consultant Surgeons.”
