As Halloween approaches, the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) is urging consumers to think carefully before purchasing novelty cosmetic contact lenses online or from non-professional sources.
ABDO continues to highlight the widespread lack of awareness regarding the risks associated with novelty cosmetic contact lenses. When not properly fitted and supplied, these lenses can cause painful eye complications, serious damage to the eye, and in some cases, vision loss.
Novelty cosmetic contact lenses are increasingly used to enhance Halloween costumes, but many wearers remain unaware that these products still require professional fitting and aftercare advice.
Max Halford, clinical and policy director from ABDO, said:
"Many people view decorative lenses as costume accessories, but they are medical devices that sit directly on the eye. Poorly fitting lenses can lead to discomfort, infection and, in serious cases, long-term damage to vision."
ABDO advises anyone considering cosmetic contact lenses to:
- obtain lenses from a regulated optical supplier
- attend a professional fitting and be shown how to apply and remove contact lenses
- follow all hygiene advice
- never share lenses with another person
- seek immediate professional advice if discomfort, redness or blurred vision occurs
