Glaucoma UK has appointed Professor Cecilia Fenerty as its new Chair of Trustees following the charity’s Annual General Meeting in March 2026.
Professor Fenerty succeeds Professor Anthony King, who stepped down after completing four years as Chair and nine years in total as a trustee.
During his tenure, Professor King provided assured and thoughtful leadership, helping to shape the charity’s strategic direction and strengthen its influence across the eye care sector. A consultant ophthalmologist with more than 25 years’ experience, he brought deep clinical insight and credibility to the charity’s governance and external engagement. Throughout his time as Chair, he consistently championed collaboration, high quality clinical care and the importance of listening to people living with glaucoma.
Glaucoma UK expressed its sincere thanks to Professor King for his dedication, expertise and the lasting impact he has made during his time as Chair.
Professor Fenerty also brings more than 25 years’ experience as a consultant ophthalmologist. She is widely respected for her work across clinical practice, service delivery and system‑level improvement, and has a long‑standing commitment to improving outcomes for people living with glaucoma.

Speaking on her appointment, Professor Fenerty said: “It is a real privilege to take on the role of Chair at Glaucoma UK. Ophthalmology services are under sustained pressure, and glaucoma care needs to continue evolving to meet patient need. One of the charity’s most important roles is ensuring that patient experience sits alongside clinical evidence in shaping services, policy and practice.”
Her appointment comes at a significant moment for the charity. In July 2026, Glaucoma UK will launch its National Patient Voices Survey, the largest UK‑wide survey of its kind focused on the lived experience of people with glaucoma. The survey is designed to generate robust, independent insight to support improvements in clinical practice, NHS planning and national policy.
Glaucoma UK continues to work collaboratively with partners across ophthalmology, optometry and the wider eye care system to improve diagnosis, treatment and support for everyone affected by glaucoma.
