We’re always ecstatic when one of our media partners bring their conference to Scotland, especially when they land in our hometown of Edinburgh. Taking place in The Assembly Rooms, a beautiful 18th century venue in the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town, we’re excited to welcome one of our favourites: The UK and Éire Glaucoma Society.
Hosted by UKEGS President, Edinburgh local, and guest editor of our Glaucoma Supplement, Andrew Tatham, this year’s programme provides another all-encompassing range of topics from trabeculectomy masterclasses and community eyecare to AI and myth busters, anchored by the theme of ‘What matters most – priorities for improving glaucoma care’.

Day one (5 November) promises to highlight cases from around the UK, projections for ‘tomorrow’s glaucoma clinic’, and abstract presentations, complete with a judging panel and winning presentations. Felipe Medeiros, Professor of Ophthalmology and Vice Chair of Research at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, will be the keynote speaker at this year’s UKEGS conference, delivering the annual Hitchings Lecture on ‘From Bletchley to the Clinic: Decoding Glaucoma Diagnosis and Progression with AI.’
As you’ll be in Scotland, it would seem silly not to include a ceilidh, right? That’s what we thought, so be sure to bring your best dancing shoes and find yourself a kilt – they will be needed!
Day two (6 November) continues digging into the heart of Dr Tatham’s programme, centring on debates, complications, ‘risky business’ and community work – providing delegates with practical takeaways from challenging cases and topics which promise to enhance both one’s confidence and wider understanding of when things don’t always go to plan. And you never know, there might also be a video competition in there somewhere, just saying…
Capping things off will be another first for UKEGS: a third instalment, taking place on the morning of 7 November, in which UKEGS President Andrew Tatham will be delivering for ST3 and above a dry lab session and trabeculectomy masterclass.
It’s also worth noting that the UKEGS Presidency will be changing hands, which means we’ll be witnessing Consultant Ophthalmologist Leon Au take the presidential torch from Andrew and continue developing UKEGS into the incredible society it has become.
All in all, this year’s UKEGS conference is one not to miss, and you never know, we might even take you on our Eye News tour of Edinburgh after one of the day’s festivities!
Tickets are on sale at www.glaucoma.uk/ukegs and we’d love to welcome you to bonnie Scotland later in the year.
