Bradford University Clinical Tutor, Benji Chandra, celebrates five years of supporting the needs of homeless people this summer.
Benji first came to learn about Vision Care for Homeless People when he took part in Optoversity Challenge – the Out of the Box Optics student challenge held at 100% Optical each year – as a student at Aston. Having visited the Birmingham VCHP clinic, it sparked a great interest.
“The volunteering really started when I qualified and became involved with the Leeds clinic in St Georges’ Crypt. I was drawn to the charity as it is a vulnerable group, so often shunned. The rewarding nature of volunteering is great, and I enjoy meeting other like-minded optoms, orthoptists and DOs. It is refreshing to give back as an eyecare professional, and it is not as scary as you might think.”
Benji, who works three days a week at Bradford Hospital and one day a week at York Hospital, has a particular interest in medical retina, corneal conditions and glaucoma.
He is keen to encourage others to become involved in the charity, commenting: "I strongly encourage others to try volunteering in a clinic. You do not need to commit to anything, just try it once and see what you think! I believe this experience broadens our horizons, enhances our clinical skills, and connects us with a network of passionate individuals dedicated to improving lives. Let's be agents of change and make a lasting impact on the lives of those in need: one pair of glasses at a time. Together, we can create a brighter future for everyone."
