YOUNG OPHTHALMOLOGISTS DAY (YOP): 18 November 2025
The YOP represents the needs of ophthalmic specialty trainees and consultant ophthalmic surgeons in their first three years of clinical practice. The YOP also run their own programme the day prior to the UKISCRS annual congress and in 2026, the line-up will cover topics like the ‘Top ten things I wish I knew when I was a resident’, a resident video competition and ‘The comeback album’ in which presenters will explain the things that have changed in their practice over time. And don’t forget about the SCOPE Imaging Competition, which will see three lucky winners awarded with an £800 education bursary, registration for the UKISCRS Congress, and a ticket for the UKISCRS Dinner. UNITED KINGDOM & IRELAND SOCIETY OF CATARACT & REFRACTIVE SURGEONS (UKISCRS): 19–20 November 2025
Celebrating its 50th anniversary, UKISCRS returns this year for their annual congress in November and we’re expecting it to be one for the history books.
19 November: Day 1
Opening with the highly anticipated ‘President's Welcome’, David Lockington will introduce delegates to the Golden Anniversary and highlight some of the exciting events in store throughout the two days, followed by a star-studded ‘President’s Plenary’ session. There will also be an insightful session dedicated to ‘50 years of UKISCRS – past, present and future’ which will see the likes of Patrick Condon, David Spalton, Milind Pande, Larry Benjamin, David Lockington and Lisa Nijm take attendees on a journey from the 70s through the modern day of cataract and refractive practice, followed by an exploration of ‘the real world of ophthalmic societies’. Bringing delegates towards lunch, Arthur Cummings will be presented the Lifetime Achievement Award, followed by his acceptance speech.
Following the buffet, UKISCRS will be highlighting the support they receive with an ‘Industry Showreel’, celebrating the incredible partners, distributors and manufacturers that provide solutions to clinicians every year in their practice. The ‘Order Order! I wish to make a statement to the House about…’ session has the likes of Victor Hu, Ben LaHood and Imane Tarib argue their cases for success, sustainability and education. And before David Lockington rounds up the day, we will hear from ‘the real Top Gun’ Steve Schallhorn, who will deliver the Council Medal Lecture.
20 November: Day 2
Leading into the second day, James Ball and Sarah Maling will be moderating the ‘10 Free papers and 5 Videos’ session, following by a further ‘Industry Showreel’ and one of the many ‘Gameshow – Win with UKISCRS’ touchpoints throughout the meeting, which provide delegates with the opportunity to win discounted tickets and more prizes.
The UKISCRS Annual General Meeting brings delegates into lunch, after which we will hear from the ‘Cutting edge technologies here and now, and hopes for the future’ session. The ‘Most memorable cases of the past 50 years!’ will be moderated by President Elect Bita Manzouri and Tom Flynn, after which UKISCRS President David Lockington will deliver the conference prizes and summarise the meeting, before instigating the Presidential handover to Bita Manzouri, who will lead the society for the next two years.
UNITED KINGDOM AND IRELAND SOCIETY OF OPHTHALMIC PROFESSIONALS (UKISOP): 19 November 2025
The annual UKISOP day alongside UKISCRS is a unique event for allied professional, including ophthalmic nurses, scientists, imagers, ECLOs, optometrists and orthoptists working in the cataract pathway – the workshops in the afternoon enable you freshen your clinical skills and have a go at cataract surgery! This year, UKISOP will be looking at the growth of the cataract pathway in a growing older population. We are also examining the brave new would of AI in ophthalmic settings. We view the power of Ai in the start of high street optometrists and post op clinics in Oxford. There is also a chance to meet your new VR orthoptist.
