Located in Oxford University’s Examination Schools this summer, we will again have the great pleasure to be attending the UK’s longest standing ophthalmic conference: the 109th Oxford Ophthalmological Congress (OOC).

As before, this annual meeting promises a brilliant attendance from some of the leading ophthalmologists and researchers from all four nations of the United Kingdom, Ireland and beyond. There will be the annual OOC garden party with a buffet, drinks and musical entertainment; the black-tie gala dinner of three courses being held on the second night; the Doyne Lecture which, on this occasion, is being delivered by Professor Chris Hammond; the master’s symposiums and more. It’s still early doors, so keep an eye on the OOC’s website for updates to their programme and look out for our socials and digital preview a little closer to the event.

At the heart of the OOC’s annual congress is the ethos which stems from its founder, Robert W Doyne, who firmly held that the OOC stands “for the cultivation of the spirit of good fellowship and of unconventionality, the right of our youngest member to rank with his oldest colleague, and last, but assuredly not least, the frank, free and tolerant discussion of scientific matters brought before its gathering.”

Trainees are encouraged to both attend as delegates but also get involved in future Congress’ as the OOC maintains its commitment to presenting a huge variety of posters, prizes and rapid-fire sessions, ensuring it is one of the year’s best ophthalmic platforms for highlighting early career voices.

As always, Eye News will be present and capturing news as it unfolds throughout the three days of Congress, so be sure to tune in and get the latest scoop if you’re unable to attend – but of course you will be, right? We’ll see you in Oxford on 6 July 2026!
