Join us for a dynamic, hands-on study day designed to strengthen your confidence and skills when dealing with ophthalmic emergencies.

What to Expect

This interactive day combines theoretical learning working through clinical scenarios, ensuring you leave equipped to oversee the initial management of urgent eye injuries and conditions effectively. Practical training sessions held at the RVI’s Emergency Eye Department will include:

  • Vision + colour vision + pupils including RAPD
  • Confrontational visual field testing
  • Extraocular movement (EOM) testing +/- cranial nerves
  • Slit lamp examination including corneal foreign body removal, everting eyelids, conjunctival swabs
  • Direct ophthalmoscopy
  • Scenario station.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the day, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a good understanding of ocular anatomy and thorough history taking
  • Impart basic information when referring to Ophthalmology (if not your specialty)
  • Understand when to administer eye drops
  • Diagnose and manage the acute red eye and sudden vision loss
  • Recognise and address eyelid swelling
  • Learn how to provide initial management for chemical injuries
  • Develop practical skills for corneal foreign body removal.

  • Ophthalmic nurses and nurse practitioners
  • Emergency and urgent treatment nurses and practitioners
  • Advanced clinical practitioners (primary and secondary care)
  • Any other healthcare professionals with an interest in ophthalmology

All participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance upon completion.
